KWIK CRICKET TOURNAMENT

Boxted Cricket Club hosted its first ever Kwik Cricket Tournament on Friday 12 June 2009. Having extended invitations to a number of other North Essex cricket clubs Boxted were delighted to have received acceptances from nine clubs from as far a field as Braintree, Kelvedon, Sudbury and Brightlingsea.

The tournament commenced at 6.00 pm on a gloriously warm June evening and all the painstaking organisational work behind the scenes paid off it being unanimously agreed that it was one of the best competitions anyone had been to for many years.

With over one hundred children ages ranging from four to eleven and even more adults the King George Playing Field looked like it was under siege for most of the evening. The BBQ, sweets and soft drinks stalls and the main bar all did good business and judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces by the end all the competitors, spectators and supporters had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Our grateful thanks go to all the committee, members and parents who helped on the day to make the event the success it was. We are very keen to repeat the event next year and we already have some ideas on how to make it bigger and better.

We entered two teams of our own in the competition under the guidance of Matt Wilson and Clive Honey. This being the first occasion our Kwik Cricketers had been entered into a competition both the club and the players were delighted to have won three of the six matches played.

This is our second year of Kwik Cricket coaching at Boxted and we regularly have twenty five plus youngsters enthusiastically training every Saturday morning at our Cage Lane Ground. If anyone is interested in coming along to take part please do not hesitate to do so. The sessions are run by ECB qualified coaches, only cost £1, commence at 9.30am and last for one and a half hours. Refreshments are available for children and any accompanying adults. The emphasis is on having a good time but also to learn some of the basic skills of cricket. We have a lot of fun so why not try it you never know one of our Kwik Cricketers could become an Ashes hero in the future. Graham Napier started his cricket career at Boxted and he hasn’t done too badly.

We should not forget our adult cricketers either in all this. As a club we are looking to expand our playing numbers and whilst we hope our present Kwik Cricketers will become adult playing members in due course we are always very grateful to receive enquiries from anyone wanting to play cricket. If you are an experienced player or are merely interested in trying out we would be very happy to hear from whatever your ability. We can be contacted via our website www.boxtedcricketclub.co.uk or just turn up at our weekly practice session on Tuesdays at 6.30.
